We believe in clean manufacturing. That’s why aluminum is a core element of our unique manufacturing strategy. Beyond being strong and lightweight, it’s very CNC-friendly, so we can make our own dropouts, lugs, bottom brackets and other frame details. We also anodize those aluminum components, which we feel is superior to paint from a durability standpoint, as well as an environmental one. Finally, when your frame has lived a long life of adventure, the aluminum can be recycled (instead of ending up in a landfill like most carbon frames).

Great morning for some mixed terrain in Portland. Had to stretch a tight calve, so I figured I’d make the best of the time off the AllRoad and snap a pic or two. There’s a hilariously large stick (branch) holding up the bike on the other side that somehow managed to be somewhat hidden.

Say hello to our bottom bracket, affectionately known as BB-5AX. That’s not a rendering. It’s the real thing, hogged out of a solid block of aluminum billet. It’s a serious exercise in form, function, precision and strength and it forms the foundation of every CIRCA frame. And it’s So F@cking Metal (SFM™).

On the form side, every surface, edge and line has been considered to harmonize with the rest of the frame’s visual language. Those little chamfers? They show up throughout the composition to knit everything together. The angled bores for the tubes all align with other aspects of the frame to create a coherent visual statement.

With respect to function, we’ll start with the milled threads for an English BB. No creaks and no presses required. For those of us who ride in foul weather, there’s also an integrated fender mount.

On the precision end, these are milled on 5 axis CNC machines (hence the name) to extremely high tolerances of 5 thousandths (0.005”) of an inch in some areas and a little tighter in others. Those tolerances serve a few purposes. The first requirement is bond-gap management. We’ve got very specific targets and this gets us there. The second benefit of that precision is the obvious one about your frame being straighter and truer than almost any other hand-built bike.

And it’s stout. Rigid. Efficient. Milled from a solid block of aluminum billet, the BB-5AX is designed for power transfer. You put force into the pedals and the force gets translated into forward motion.

Our house doesn’t have a garage, so the entry hall has functioned as the landing spot for my daily rider (much to the chagrin of my wife). Over time, the wall got marked, scuffed and beat up, so we’d been thinking about how to improve the situation. I finally knocked out a solution earlier this week, installing molding, doing some darker, scuff-hiding painting that tied in with other parts of the house and adding a custom acrylic plate with some nice fasteners. Whadayathink?
